DHA (dihydroxyacetone)
The active ingredient in every self tan — a simple sugar that reacts with amino acids in the outer layer of skin to create brown colour.
DHA develops colour through a browning reaction closely related to the Maillard reaction that toasts bread. It works only on the dead outer layer of skin, involves no UV or melanin, and fades as that layer naturally sheds over about a week.
