Skin pH is the acid–alkaline balance of the surface layer of skin, typically sitting between 4.5 and 5.5 on healthy skin.

DHA reacts more reliably with skin sitting in the natural pH range. Applying tan immediately after a high-pH soap or scrub causes uneven oxidation and patchy colour.
