Self Tanning in Winter: Why Cold Weather Is Actually the Best Time

Self Tanning in Winter: Why Cold Weather Is Actually the Best Time

Winter Is Self Tan Season (Seriously)

Most people think of self tanning as a summer activity, but experienced tanners know the truth: winter is actually the best time for self tan. The conditions are ideal, the results last longer, and nothing beats having a golden glow when everyone else is looking pale and washed out.

Why Self Tan Develops Better in Winter

DHA — the active ingredient in self tanner — develops best on cool, dry skin. In summer, sweat and humidity can interfere with development, causing streaks and uneven patches. Winter air is drier, your skin isn't sweating, and you're less likely to jump in a pool or ocean the day after tanning. All of this means better, more even colour development.

Winter Tans Last Longer

In summer, frequent swimming, sweating, and sun exposure all accelerate tan fading. In winter, none of these factors apply. Your tan will last significantly longer — often 8–10 days versus the 5–7 you might get in summer. That's fewer applications, less product used, and more consistent colour.

The Mood-Boosting Effect

There's genuine psychology behind this. Studies show that having a healthy-looking glow improves self-confidence and mood. In the depths of winter, when daylight is limited and everyone's bundled up in layers, a subtle golden tan can be a real mental health boost. You feel like you look healthier, and that translates into feeling better overall.

Winter Tanning Tips

Your winter skin needs extra prep. Cold weather means drier skin, so exfoliation is even more important — dead, dry skin cells will make any tan fade unevenly. Moisturise daily for at least 3 days before tanning. Apply tan in a warm room so your skin isn't goosebumped (goosebumps cause dotted appearance). And use a slightly darker shade than your summer go-to, since your base skin is lighter.

Layer Smart

Apply your tan at night, wear loose dark pyjamas, and by morning you'll have a fully developed glow. The long winter nights are actually perfect for overnight tan development. Pair with Australian Glow's Clear Mousse if you want zero transfer risk on your bedding.

The Australian Glow Winter Routine

Exfoliate two days before. Moisturise daily. Apply Express Mousse in the evening — Dark or Ultra Dark for a noticeable glow against winter-pale skin. Shower after 1 hour (or leave overnight for maximum depth). Moisturise daily to maintain. Reapply weekly. Glow all winter long.
